Bootstrap – a marvelous Front-end framework

Bootstrap is the most popular HTML, CSS, and JavaScript framework for developing responsive and mobile first projects on the web. It is a truly marvelous framework.

With an upcoming release of Bootstrap 4 around the corner, I would like to share 5 reasons why I use it for my web projects:

Speed of development and easiness to use

Setting up the base skeleton for your project is a breeze. You don’t even have to download the source files as Bootstrap offers its users CDN links.

If you’re new, the framework offers you a basic template to start with, or a number of pre-made base templates to help you learn all of its features. From here, you can start customizing and venture out with your own creative solutions – the sky’s the limit.

Responsiveness

The need to have a responsive website is very important. Bootstrap’s extremely flexible, customizable and extendable grid system is perfect tool to help you achieve that! Did I mention that Bootstrap is consistent across every browser and device?

Less is more and designers can get Sass-y

If like me, you’re a fan of CSS with superpowers aka Sass (Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets) or LESS you’re in for a treat! The framework ships with vanilla CSS, but its source code utilizes the two most popular CSS preprocessors, Less and Sass. Quickly get started with precompiled CSS or build on the source.

Full of JavaScript Features

With Bootstrap, you get extensive JavaScript features and an integration with jQuery (another awesome framework).

Free, open-source and comes with an excellent support

Proof is in the docs! Another advantage of Bootstrap is that it gives an impressive documentation, examples and demos that will make it easier to use for someone new. In this way, you can save time because you don’t have to play with everything to learn how to use it. Everything is in the documentation. Not only that! Developers all over the world create their own Bootstrap support groups, forums and even Meetup Groups!

The reasons just keep mounting. If you’re not convinced whether you should or not use Bootstrap, check out beautiful and inspiring uses of this framework and let me know what you think! BTW, this website is proudly built on Bootstrap 3.

This excellent, web based and totally free tool gives you insight on how well your site loads and provides actionable recommendations on how to optimize it. This tool is a gem for those who are looking to optimize their sites. Instead of downloading the YSlow extension, or going to Google Webmaster Tools to get Google Page Speed score, you can simply do it all through GTMetrix dashboard.

Check out this example report:

How to use GTMetrix to optimize your site

As you can see in the report breakdown, it shows all the things you need to work on based on the priority level. It provides both, Google Page Speed, and YSlow from Yahoo speed grades. The best part is when you click on the tab, it will give you exact list of items that need to be worked on and an explanation on how to do it.  Each tab also has a “What does this mean?” info window. If you click on that, it will tell you in full details what each of the items mean as well as the link with more resources.

What are your thoughts on GTMetrix? Have you been using it for your sites? Let me know in the comments.

RIP Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10

Internet Explorer  8, 9, 10 reached its “end of life” this month.

Internet Explorer (IE) has long been the bane of many web developers’ existence, but that may not be so for much longer.  Earlier this month Microsoft announced that they will no longer support IE 8, 9 and 10. IE’s “end of life” means the browsers will no longer receive security updates or future patches, leaving users open to unwanted vulnerabilities.

A patch update went live January 12 and nagged Internet Explorer users to upgrade to a modern browser or run the risk of being exposed to vulnerabilities.  This update adds the nag box that will appear for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 users still using the old browsers after installing the update.

This is great news for developers who still need to target older browsers for clients – not needing to worry about whether or not modern CSS (cascading style sheets) will break in these archaic browsers.

Internet Explorer is dead.  Now what?

If you’re an everyday IE user:

If you are still using any version of Internet Explorer older than 11, it’s time to upgrade now before it’s too late.
